Mecklenburg County Assessor's Office: Disabled Veteran Exemption for Specialty Motor Vehicles

Mecklenburg County takes the State's vehicle tax exemption for a disabled veteran's vehicle altered for a service-connected disability on form AV-10V, filed within 30 days of the date the tax is due, by email or post to its registered motor vehicle exemptions unit.

Also called: vehicle tax, AV-10V, 105-275, adaptive equipment, registered motor vehicle, House Bill 39.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemption is the State's, under G.S. 105-275(5a); see the North Carolina entry for who qualifies. The Mecklenburg County Assessor's Office describes it as covering "motor vehicles owned by disabled veterans that are altered with special equipment to accommodate a service-connected disability", on form AV-10V, and says the application must be filed within 30 days of the date taxes are due, as G.S. 105-330.3(b) provides. Send it by email to the Assessor's registered motor vehicle exemptions mailbox (preferred) or by post to County Assessor's Office - RMV - Exemptions, P.O. Box 36819, Charlotte, NC 28236. The page also notes House Bill 39 of the 2025 session, which would extend the exemption to any vehicle owned by a veteran with a 100% rating certified by VA, and says it has not passed. The General Assembly's record shows it referred to the House Finance Committee on February 5, 2025 with no later action. Until a bill passes, an unadapted vehicle is taxed whatever the rating.
