Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Motor Vehicle Administration issues disabled veteran plates for a resident veteran with a service-connected injury. Two fee rules apply. A veteran rated 100% disabled receives the plates free and receives permanent registration. No annual registration fee is due, and the registration card and sticker are not renewed at an MVA office. The MVA also says a 100% disabled veteran can choose other plate types and still have the registration fee waived. A vanity, organizational, or other background plate can still have its own plate fee, and those plates are not the permanent-registration product. A veteran with a service-connected disability rating of 50% to 99%, or an unemployability rating of 50% to 99%, receives the disabled veteran plate free. The annual or biennial registration fee and the surcharge are still due. That plate does not carry the wheelchair symbol. The 100% plates are printed with or without the wheelchair symbol. Plates with the wheelchair symbol need the separate disability parking application and the vehicle information. Bring a letter showing the rating. The current MVA instructions ask for a letter on Department of Veterans and Military Families letterhead. Make an appointment in myMVA. Eligible vehicles for the disabled veteran plate include a passenger car, a motorcycle in the classes the MVA lists, a multipurpose vehicle, and a truck of one ton or less. The same agency can add a Veteran designation to a driver license or identification card at no cost. Proof can be a DD-214, a VA letter, or another document on the MVA list. The designation is not the plate, and it does not waive registration by itself. Disabled American Veterans organization plates are a different product and have an issuance fee. They are not this exemption.
