Maui County Veterans' Cemeteries at Makawao, Hoolehua and Lanai City
Maui County runs veterans' cemeteries at Makawao (Maui), Hoolehua (Molokai) and Lanai City for any veteran discharged other than dishonourably, resident or not, a service member, and a spouse or minor child buried in the same plot. The State Office of Veterans' Services arranges interment, flag and bronze marker; County Public Works opens the grave. Maui 808-876-4534, Molokai 808-553-3222, Lanai 808-565-7086.
Maui County Code chapter 13.20, "Veterans' Cemeteries", governs the county's three: at Makawao on Maui, at Hoolehua on Molokai and at Lanai City on Lanai. The Hawaii entry on veterans cemeteries describes the State cemetery at Kaneohe and the county ones together.
Who may be buried (13.20.020). Any deceased service member; any deceased veteran, "whether resident or a nonresident"; a spouse or minor child who dies first, if the veteran signs a statement that the veteran's remains will go in the same cemetery and plot; the widow, widower or minor children of a veteran buried there; a veteran's personal effects when the remains cannot be found; and an adult child who became permanently incapable of self-support before 18, with the director's approval. "Veteran" means service discharged "under conditions other than dishonorable", and includes a U.S. citizen who served in an allied force in a war or campaign in which the United States also fought.
How it works (13.20.030 and 13.20.040). Apply for interment through the State veterans' affairs adviser (now the Office of Veterans' Services) at least two working days ahead, with honourable discharge papers. The adviser arranges an American flag and a flat bronze marker for the veteran; markers for family members are the family's. The county assigns plots (no reservations; family members share a plot where the health rules allow), and the Department of Public Works opens and closes the grave. Burials are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., unless the family asks otherwise; firing squads are the family's or the mortuary's to arrange.
Rules at the grave (13.20.050). Flat bronze markers and set-in bronze vases only; no planting or curbing; cut flowers in other containers only on State and federal holidays, removed within seven days.
