Mason County Assessor: Senior, Disabled and Disabled Veteran Exemption
The Mason County Assessor's page gives the 2027 rules beside the old ones: a veteran rated 40% or more, or paid for a total disability at any percentage, qualifies with combined disposable income of $70,000 or less for the 2027 tax year. Renew every three years.
The exemption is the State's; the Washington entry explains it. The Mason County Assessor administers it from 411 N 5th Street, Shelton.
What the page says for 2027. Under ESSB 6162, "Beginning with the 2027 tax year, the law increases the income thresholds and expands the amount of property tax relief" and "lowers the service-connected disability rating requirement for qualifying disabled veterans from 80% to 40%." A veteran qualifies, as of December 31 of the year before taxes are due, when receiving VA compensation at a "Combined service-connected evaluation rating of 40% or higher" or a "Total disability rating for service-connected disability without regard to evaluation percent", which reaches a veteran paid at the 100% rate for individual unemployability. "For the 2027 tax year, the maximum combined disposable income for Mason County is $70,000." The home must be lived in more than six months a year.
How. The State application and Combined Disposable Income Worksheet, with the VA's written acknowledgement of the rating; report changes with a Change in Status form, and renew every three years.
What is out of date. Lower on the same page the older text remains: an 80% rating and $40,000, or $55,000 from 2024; the Treasurer's foreclosure page also still says 80%. For taxes collected from 2027, the 40% rule and the $70,000 limit apply. The Assessor's forms page also carries the State's property tax grant for widows and widowers of veterans.
