Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Michigan Veterans Trust Fund's temporary grants are a State fund with a county committee in every county; the State entries carry its statutory basis (Public Act 9 of 1946, as amended) and the statewide picture. Marquette County's committee sits in the county's Department of Veterans Affairs, 215 West Hematite Drive, Ishpeming (906-485-1996); office hours Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Its county page states the eligibility papers: discharge papers or DD-214 showing service dates and place of entry, proof of residence, marriage certificate, birth certificates of minor children, the bills for which assistance is requested, proof of income for the last 90 days, receipts for all expenses for the last 30 days, and a death certificate for a widow or legal dependent. Base eligibility, as the county page states it: a legal resident of Michigan at the time of application; a discharge under honorable conditions; 180 days of active service in the World War II, Korean, Vietnam, Persian Gulf or post-conflict expeditionary periods, with periods combinable - or, since the page's "over 65 (new)" rule, any U.S. military veteran over 65, whatever the service dates. Less than 180 days requires a discharge for a physical or mental disability incurred in the line of duty. The fund grants temporary emergency help, not loans; applications are investigated and decided in confidence, with a personal hearing on request and an appeal to the MVTF Board of Trustees. The county's Emergency Grant Procedure brief reproduces the fund's definition of need, and the page links the Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti Home in Marquette.
