On May 5, 2026 the Board of Commissioners voted 5-0 to place the proposal on the August 2026 ballot: "Shall Marquette County levy a millage of 0.0500 mill ($0.05 per $1,000 of taxable value) for the years 2027 through 2035 inclusive, as authorized by MCL 35.21, for the purpose of improving and expanding services for veterans, including outreach, access to benefits and healthcare, support for veterans facing mental health challenges, rural service delivery, transportation coordination, and countywide services provided by the Marquette County Department of Veterans Affairs?" - estimated at $171,900 in its first calendar year. The September 14, 2026 budget work session minutes record that "Marquette County Veterans Affairs [was] successful in August 2026 elections", put the millage's 2027 revenue at about $170,000, and fund a new 1 FTE Veterans Benefits Counselor at approximately $100,000 from it. The September 15, 2026 amendments added $15,500 to the department for the August 2026 election ballot costs. Michigan's county veterans relief and millage framework is written up in the State entries (MCL 35.21; the county veterans relief fund).
