Marion County refunds up to $1,000 a year of the county's own property tax to a homesteading resident who served in the Afghanistan or Persian Gulf combat zones in that year, under Ordinance 05-33. Apply in person to Veterans Services, with orders, the DD-214 and the paid tax bill, within four years.
Marion County Ordinance 05-33 creates the Active Military Combat Duty Grant, run by Veterans Services. The county describes it as a refund of property taxes once they are paid for the qualifying year.
Who. A Marion County resident who owned and lived in a homestead with a homestead exemption on December 31 of the year, is or was serving in the U.S. military (active, reserve or Guard), and was ordered into a designated combat zone that year: the zones of Executive Order 13239 (Afghanistan and its airspace) and Executive Order 12744 (the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Gulf of Oman, the northern Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates). The county commission may extend it by resolution to later executive-order combat zones.
How much. Up to $1,000 a calendar year, and only of the taxes Marion County itself levied, not school board, water management district or city taxes.
Applying. In person at Veterans Services with certified combat duty orders and proof of combat service (DD-214), the paid tax bill for each year claimed with proof of the homestead exemption, and, for an agent such as a spouse, the document authorising the agent. Applications are due by December 31 and no later than four years after the combat service. A willfully false application means repayment and permanent disqualification.
The application form on the county's site dates from 2011 and gives the office's old address, 2528 E. Silver Springs Boulevard; the office is now at 2730 E. Silver Springs Boulevard, Unit 100. The deployment exemption in section 196.173 is a separate State benefit; see the Florida entry.
