Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Maricopa County runs two separate veterans courts. Superior Court Veterans Court. A problem-solving court for veterans on probation with Maricopa County Adult Probation, aimed at service-related trauma, substance use and mental health. The team is a judicial officer, the prosecutor, defense counsel, veteran mentors, a VA Veterans Justice Outreach social worker, community providers and four probation officers. Participants move through four phases, from a treatment plan through stabilization to transition. On graduation an eligible veteran may get fines and fees reduced and, in some cases, early termination of probation. Hearings are on Thursdays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the South Court Tower, 175 W. Madison Street, Phoenix. Justice Courts Veterans Treatment Court. Started in February 2021 for people who have served or are serving, and expanded in 2023 to four regional centres, Northwest, Northeast, Central/Downtown and Southeast. Each of the county's 27 justice courts, which hear misdemeanours and traffic cases, refers veterans to its regional centre, where the court builds an individual plan with volunteers and community partners. Each centre has its own email for questions. Neither court publishes a rating or discharge test. Ask the defense lawyer to request a referral.
