Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The recording rule is the State's (IC 10-17-2); the Indiana entry explains it. The Recorder's page: "The Indiana State Statue IC 10-17-2 allows you to safeguard your discharge papers by filing them in the County Recorder' Office. This service is free of charge to you. The original documents or a Veteran's Administration certified copy may be filed Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. When your papers have been recorded, the original documents will be returned to you and along with a recorded copy." Copies. "Certified copies of the DD214 can be obtained from the Recorder's Office at no additional cost to you, IF your DD214 was recorded with our office." The veteran must show photo ID; otherwise the Recorder gives a certified copy only to a county or city service officer, an Indiana Department of Veterans' Affairs employee, a licensed funeral director arranging the burial, the spouse or next of kin of a deceased veteran with the death certificate, or an attorney in fact, guardian or personal representative with the papers that appoint them. Honor Rewards. "By recording your DD214 with our office (at no cost), you can fill out the form to receive your Honor Rewards card", which gives discounts at participating local businesses; the businesses set the discounts. Recorder's Office, 16 E 9th Street, Suite 205, second floor of the Courthouse, Anderson, IN 46016; (765) 641-9613.
