Madison Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions

Madison’s assessor prints its veterans’ amounts with the revaluation increases of 12-62g - a $9,000 wartime exemption and rating tiers to $31,500, each doubled for the income-based additional exemption - and its Code § 20-12 gives the gold star parents’ and spouses’ exemption of 12-81ii.

Also called: property tax, 12-81g, veterans exemption, assessor, Madison.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The assessor’s veterans exemption page requires an honorable discharge (DD-214) recorded with the Madison Town Clerk by September 30, and proof of the service-connected rating to the assessor by March 31. Its amount table prints the revaluation-increased exemptions: a base wartime exemption of $9,000, $18,000 for a rating of 10 to 25 percent, $22,500 for 26 to 50 percent, $27,000 for 51 to 75 percent and $31,500 for 76 to 100 percent or age over 65 - nine times the statutory amounts of 12-81(19) and 12-81(20), which Madison applies under the revaluation increases of 12-62g. The additional veterans exemption, income-driven, is twice each figure: $18,000 base, $36,000, $45,000, $54,000 and $63,000. Applications for the additional exemption are biennial, February 1 to September 30, with income limits set annually by OPM - the page prints $43,800 single and $53,400 married for the 2024 grand list. The page also describes the exemption Public Act 24-46 added for a veteran with a 100 percent service-connected permanent and total disability rating, effective October 1, 2024 (C.G.S. 12-81(83)), and an active duty military motor vehicle exemption applied for annually. Code § 20-12, adopted by ordinance April 4, 2023 and effective October 1, 2023, enacts the 12-81ii exemption for a parent whose child was killed in action or the surviving spouse of a person killed in action: property including real property, personal property and motor vehicles, on application to the assessor by the assessment date with two affidavits of disinterested persons recorded in the town clerk’s office, renewed biennially. No other veterans’ section appears in Madison’s code, chapter 20, and the town did not answer OLR’s 2023 survey; whether Madison offers the 12-81g(b) option or a 12-81f additional exemption of its own is not recorded, so ask the assessor.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
