Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The rules are the State's; see the Alabama entry on recording discharge papers. The Probate Judge's office is in the Madison County Courthouse, 100 North Side Square, Huntsville 35801 (256-532-3330, [email protected]). Recording. Bring the original DD-214, the Member 4 copy. "There is no charge for the initial recording." The office gives one complimentary certified copy at recording and mails the original back in about 7 to 10 days. Copies later. Certified copies are available "upon presentation of proper identification", at "$2.00 per certified copy". Where it differs from the State's statement of the law. The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs' 2026 booklet, citing Ala. Code 31-1-1, says the people entitled to see the record "may examine the record or obtain free of charge a copy or certified copy". A veteran, spouse, next of kin or county veteran service officer asked to pay $2 can point to that. The Code's own site could not be reached to check the section text.
