Macomb County Veteran Burial Allowance and Flag Case

Macomb County pays a burial allowance toward the funeral of a veteran or spouse whose assets were under $50,000, not counting the home, and gives a flag case. It takes peacetime veterans with two years' service as well as wartime veterans. The county does not publish the amount; in July 2026 its commission discussed raising it to $750.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Michigan requires every county to pay at least $300 toward the burial of a qualifying wartime veteran, spouse or surviving spouse (MCL 35.801; see the Michigan entry on the county burial allowance). Macomb County's Veterans' Affairs Commission decides the applications. What the county asks, by its page. The veteran must have served more than 90 days of active duty with at least one day in a period of war, or two years in peacetime, and must have been a Macomb County resident. The assets at death must be under $50,000, not counting a primary residence. The next of kin claiming it must have paid the funeral expenses out of pocket, and the claim must be made within two years of the death. Bring the DD-214 or separation papers, the death certificate, the paid funeral bill and, for a spouse, the marriage licence. Wider than the statute. Section 35.801 requires wartime service and an estate under $40,000. Macomb's $50,000 asset limit and its peacetime route both go further. The statute also accepts a veteran with under 90 days whose service ended because of a service-connected disability; the county page does not mention that route, so a family in that position should cite the statute. The amount. The county does not publish what it pays. The commission's minutes for July 21, 2026 record a budget discussion of raising the burial allowance to $750 and the income threshold to $100,000, without a recorded vote, so ask the department what is in force. The State floor of $300 applies whatever the county decides. Flag case. The county gives a flag case on the same service and residence test, claimed within two years of the death. The burial flag itself comes from VA, usually through the funeral home. Federal benefits the department will file: burial in a national cemetery (Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly is nearest, 800-535-1117), a government headstone or niche marker, a Presidential Memorial Certificate and the VA burial allowance.
