Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Michigan county clerks record discharges, keep them confidential for 70 years and give copies free to the veteran and those working on the veteran's behalf (MCL 35.31 to 35.35; see the Michigan entry on discharge records). Recording. Book an appointment with the Clerk's Vital Records office, 120 North Main Street, Mount Clemens, and bring the DD-214 with original signatures. Copies. In person or by mail to Macomb County Clerk, Attn: Military Discharges, 120 N. Main St., Mount Clemens, MI 48043, with photo identification. The Clerk charges no copy fee. Recorded discharges cannot be viewed, and the Clerk gives copies only to "the discharged military person or beneficiaries", with heirs proving the death and their relationship. Narrower than the statute. MCL 35.32 also lets a person with the veteran's permission, and a veterans service officer, the Michigan Veterans Trust Fund or a county veterans counsellor helping with a benefit claim, see and copy the record free. A service officer turned away can cite the section. Phone 586-469-5205.
