Lyon County Recorder: Recording Military Discharge Papers

The Lyon County Recorder records and indexes documents under state law, with a self-service screen that can email an owner when a document is recorded in their name or parcel. NRS 419.020 makes recording an honorable discharge free, but the Recorder's July 1, 2024 fee schedule lists no discharge line, and its recording requirements page omits the statutory exception a discharge has from the format rules.

Also called: DD-214, DD214, recorder, Anita Talbot, discharge papers, NRS 419.020, NRS 247.110, Yerington, recording notification, Declaration of Value, self service.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

NRS 419.020 requires every county recorder to record a certificate of honorable discharge "free of any charge therefor"; see the Nevada entry. The Lyon County Recorder, Anita Talbot, at 27 S. Main Street, Yerington, NV 89447, (775) 463-6581, open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., says its duties and authority are set by the NRS: it records and indexes authorized documents and collects the recording fees state law sets, including the real property transfer tax, but does not prepare documents or give legal advice (NRS 7.285, echoed on its General Recording Information page, read 2026-10-21). The format rules and the gap in them. The Recorder's General Recording Information page outlines what a recordable document must meet: legibility, names printed under signatures, a notary acknowledgment for real-property documents, a title, the Assessor's Parcel Number on transfers and documents with a legal description, a return address, a statement of the law allowing any Social Security number it contains, the preparer of a metes-and-bounds description, a 3-inch by 3-inch space in the upper right corner of the first page, and black text of at least 10-point Times Roman on uncolored paper. NRS 247.110, the statute behind those rules, expressly excepts a military discharge from its paper and margin requirements, as the Washoe and Nye recorders' pages note. Lyon's page quotes no NRS 247.110 and prints no discharge exception, so a veteran bringing a DD-214 may be met with the 3-by-3-corner and formatting demands; the State exception still applies. Fee and its silence. The Recorder's schedule of fees effective July 1, 2024 (read 2026-10-21) sets a $43 general recording flat fee plus the SB 11-era surcharges and says nothing about a military discharge, so it neither charges a line for one nor prints the statutory free rule; a veteran asked to pay for recording an honorable discharge should cite NRS 419.020. Public-record caution and the local extra. Recorded documents are open records, and Clark County, for one, publishes recorded discharges, so a veteran weighing whether to record a DD-214 should ask how the Recorder handles it first; recording is always optional and archival copies come from the National Archives. What is local and useful: the Recorder's self-service screen offers a recording notification alert, an email when a document is recorded with your name or Assessor's Parcel Number on it, sold on the Recorder's home page as early warning of property fraud. The Recorder's pages do not say whether a recorded discharge itself appears in that index or in the public search.
