Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The county sells plots in its own cemeteries and its rules carry a veteran's waiver. The Cemetery Rules and Regulations the Board of County Commissioners adopted in 2024 (posted as DocumentCenter/View/12749, read 2026-10-21) set a burial plot at $1,000 (5' x 10') and a cremation plot at $250 (2'6" x 2'6"; 5' x 5' at Dayton for rocky terrain) and then state that a Veteran's burial or cremation plot is $0, "donated with a copy of DD214 separation papers showing an Honorable Discharge." Plot fees are also waived for infants and children 16 and under. Burials must comply with federal, state and county law, be pre-arranged and approved by a Lyon County Cemetery representative, and be opened and closed through a licensed funeral director. Markers. Every burial plot must have a headstone or marker and cremation plots take a flat or pillow marker up to 12" x 24"; the rules note that the Veterans Administration will supply a plaque for an honorably discharged veteran on application with a DD-214. Where. The Buildings and Grounds Division maintains the county's cemeteries and sells the plots. Mason Valley and Smith Valley (Hillcrest Cemetery, in Smith Valley, and Valley View, in Yerington) run through Lyon County Facilities at 27 S. Main Street, Yerington, (775) 463-6551; Dayton, Silver Springs and Silver City through Parks and Grounds at 34 Lakes Blvd, Dayton, P.O. Box 1544, (775) 246-6227. Dayton Cemetery dates to 1851 and the county calls it one of the oldest constantly maintained in the State. Board business in the year read. The Smith Valley Citizens Advisory Board voted on March 4, 2026 to recommend that the Board accept a donation from the local Clampers of a plaque honoring the county's veterans for the new flagpole monument at Hillcrest Cemetery; the Board accepted it 5-0 on March 19, 2026 (item 12.b), aiming to install it for the Memorial Day celebration. The May 21, 2026 minutes record Comm. Hockaday's reminder of the upcoming Memorial Day ceremony at the veterans' area of Hillcrest Cemetery in Smith Valley and that the Clampers will present the donated plaque there. Recognition, not a benefit - recorded because the county's Board set it and a surviving spouse looking for the veterans' area will find it there.
