Also called: property tax, real estate tax, Loudoun property tax, three acres, 100% disabled.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

This is how Loudoun County applies the statewide disabled-veteran real estate exemption. The Commissioner of the Revenue takes the application. There is no income test and no net-worth test. Loudoun exempts the primary home and up to three acres. That acreage follows Loudoun's elderly and disabled relief, which also covers three acres. Garages or storage for household goods or motor vehicles can qualify. Pools, barns, and land past three acres stay on the tax roll. A manufactured or mobile home can qualify. The land under it is exempt only when the veteran owns that land. The home has to be owned or co-owned by the veteran and occupied as the primary residence. A home held in a trust, or a life estate held by the veteran or spouse, can qualify. Loudoun asks for the trust and any amendments. If someone other than the spouse is a co-owner, Loudoun may grant a partial exemption based on the ownership share. A move to a different primary home needs a new request. The disability test matches the state rule. VA has to confirm a 100% service-connected, total and permanent disability, or a total disability rating based on individual unemployability from a service-connected disability. Documentation is required with the first request. File the county's disabled-veteran application online or as a PDF through the document upload portal. A veteran who is permanently and totally disabled but does not meet this VA test looks at Loudoun's separate income-based relief instead.
