Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

County Code section 15.64.446, enacted in 2007, exempts a vehicle displaying one of these California special plates from parking fees at any county-owned or county-operated public lot: Disabled Veteran (Vehicle Code 5007(a)(2)), Pearl Harbor Survivor (5101.3), Medal of Honor and Distinguished Service Cross (5101.4 and 5101.6), former American Prisoner of War (5101.5) and Purple Heart (5101.8). The exemption has three limits. It applies only where the fee is paid into a meter or to an attendant, not at a lot whose entrance or exit is controlled solely by an automated system. It does not apply on weekends or holidays, except Veterans Day, where fees are otherwise charged on those days. And the vehicle must still obey every other parking rule at the lot. It runs off the plate, not a rating. A veteran with a qualifying rating or decoration who has an ordinary plate gets nothing under this section; get the special plate from the DMV first. City lots and beach lots run by a city are outside it.
