Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Los Angeles County runs its county veterans service office as a department. County Code section 2.88.010 goes further than Military and Veterans Code section 970, which only permits a county to appoint an officer: it says the board "shall appoint" a veteran as county veteran service officer, titled Director of Military and Veterans Affairs, bound by CalVet's standards (section 2.88.030) and in charge of Bob Hope Patriotic Hall (section 2.88.050). Claims. The department's veterans service officers help, free of charge, with VA disability compensation, pension, education, health care and burial benefits, appeals, and the CalVet College Fee Waiver for dependents. Make an appointment at 1-877-4LA-VETS or online. Veteran Peer Access Network. VPAN connects veterans, service members and families with peers, veterans and military family members themselves, who walk with them through housing, health, legal and benefit problems and link County departments, the VA and community organizations. Request it through the department's VPAN form. Veteran Housing Navigation Program. Announced December 19, 2025, it puts housing navigator teams in each of the five supervisorial districts to help homeless and justice-involved veterans search for units, get documents ready, deal with landlords, get to viewings and fill in rental applications, working with the Veteran Coordinated Entry System and the VA. From January 1, 2027, Assembly Bill 2219 requires a vacancy in the director's post to be filled within 12 months and accreditation within nine months of appointment; see the California entry on county veterans service offices.
