Where it applies

Lorain County's Veterans Treatment Court is a specialized docket for veterans charged with felonies, certified by the Supreme Court of Ohio. Judge James T. Walther has presided since its first docket in September 2013; he is the county's Probate Court judge, and the Supreme Court lists the docket under that division. The court is reached through the Common Pleas Court, 225 Court Street, Elyria (440-329-5443). How it works. The judge holds court once a week and participants return regularly for status review hearings. Before each docket the treatment team meets: the judge, probation, the VA's veterans justice outreach specialist, appointed defence counsel, a designated prosecutor, the peer mentor coordinator, a Vet Center representative and a coordinator from the county Veterans Service Commission. Treatment is for trauma, substance use and mental illness. The court's page sets no discharge test and lists no excluded offences; ask the defence lawyer or the probation department about a referral.
