Livingston County Veteran Burial Assistance

Livingston County pays veteran burial and cremation costs through its Veterans Relief Fund application - burial is a named eligible use - but the county does not publish the amount it pays; the statutory floor is $300.

Also called: burial, funeral, cremation, burial assistance, 35.801, $300, relief fund, spouse.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Michigan requires every county to pay at least $300 toward the burial of a qualifying wartime veteran, or the veteran's spouse or surviving spouse (MCL 35.801; see the Michigan entry on the county burial allowance). Livingston County handles its burial duty inside the Veterans Relief Fund: the fund application lists "Burial or cremation costs" among the eligible uses of assistance, applied for the same way - a DD-214, the last 90 days of bank statements and a Veterans Service Officer's review, at (517) 546-6338. What the county pays per burial is published nowhere found: the budget book shows fund 293, the Veterans Relief Fund, spending a few thousand dollars a year, with the millage fund's $190,000 supportive-services line behind the office's assistance programmes. The statute's own tests - a discharge under honorable conditions, wartime service, an estate under $40,000 with the homestead excluded, and a claim within two years - protect a family the office turns away.
