Limestone County Disabled Veteran Tag and Vehicle Tax

The Limestone County License Commissioner issues the disabled veteran plate and assesses county ad valorem on the vehicle. The state fee exemption does not, by itself, remove that local vehicle tax.

Also called: car tag, license plate, ad valorem, license commissioner, disabled veteran tag, registration.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Limestone County's License Commissioner issues motor vehicle licenses, titles, and conservation licenses, and assesses and collects ad valorem tax and casual sales tax on motor vehicles. The commissioner is Joseph Cannon. The office is the Clinton Street Courthouse Annex, 100 South Clinton Street, Suite B, Athens, AL 35611. Phone (256) 233-6430. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tag and title email is [email protected]. Midday hours are limited to a short list of services. The office's military plate list includes the disabled veteran plate. The fee rules are the statewide plate exemption: state license tax and registration fees come off at a 10% service-connected rating, one plate if the rating is under 50%, and local tax can remain. Because this office assesses the vehicle's ad valorem tax, a Limestone owner should expect that local tax unless a separate exemption applies. The exemption that removes ad valorem is the one for a vehicle VA paid for, kept for private use. The same office can add the veteran designation to a driver license. That designation is one of the proofs Alabama state parks accept for the admission waiver. A first-time disability parking placard or plate is a different application and needs a physician's signature. It is not the disabled veteran fee exemption. Hunting and fishing licenses that the county issues are also sold here. The rating rules for those licenses are the state entries.
