Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemption is the State's, under Code section 48-5-48; see the Georgia entry. Liberty County's Assessors Office lists it on its homestead checklist as "W5 - 100% Disabled Veteran Homestead", with these documents: a Georgia driver's licence and Georgia vehicle registration showing the property address, a current water, power or gas bill, and the "Department of Veteran's Affairs letter indicating rating and status of disability". The deadline. The county page says completed applications "must be postmarked or received by our office no later than 5 PM on April 1st". Senate Bill 566 (2026) lets an applicant file until the end of the 45-day appeal period after assessment notices go out, so a late application is still worth making. Backdating. In October, November and December 2025 the Board of Tax Assessors approved its staff's recommendations to backdate the disabled veteran homestead exemption to 2023 or 2024 for named owners who met the State's qualifications, and in September 2026 it took up a "Law Interpretation Discussion - O.C.G.A. 48-5-40 (Backdating Of Veteran 100% Disabled)". A veteran whose VA rating reaches back to an earlier year should ask the office whether the exemption can too. Where. Liberty County Assessors Office, Hinesville; (912) 876-3568. The office asks applicants to use the Department of Revenue's forms.
