Leon County Veterans Emergency Assistance Program (VEAP)
Leon County's Veterans Emergency Assistance Program pays one-time rent or mortgage (up to HUD Fair Market Rent), utilities or home fuel (enough to avoid 30 days' disruption) and transport (up to a round-trip intercity bus fare) for county veterans with at least 90 days' service in a temporary crisis.
"The Veterans Emergency Assistance Program (VEAP) provides immediate financial assistance, including rent/mortgage, utilities, home fuel, and transportation to eligible Leon County residents who are veterans and have served a minimum of 90 days in the United States military." It is for a family crisis, a lost job "or some other emergency"; "VEAP provides temporary emergency assistance and is not ongoing public assistance".
How much. Rent or mortgage up to the HUD Fair Market Rent for Leon County by bedroom count (the page's fiscal 2024 table: $1,183 for one bedroom, $1,339 for two, $1,708 for three, $1,903 for four), with the applicant showing they can pay anything above it needed to stop the eviction or foreclosure. Utilities or home fuel up to "the amount required to avoid disruption of services for the subsequent 30 days". Transportation up to "the equivalent cost of a round-trip intercity coach service (i.e. Greyhound or similar)".
How to apply. On the county's Neighborly application portal (portal.neighborlysoftware.com/LEONCOUNTYFL), choosing the Emergency Assistance Program; without internet access, call the Office of Human Services and Community Partnerships at 850-606-1940. The Board's fiscal 2027 funding item (March 10, 2026) names VEAP beside the general Direct Emergency Assistance Program, which stopped taking new applications in 2025.
