Lenawee County Veteran Burial Allowance

Lenawee pays the county burial allowance through its Department of Veterans Affairs out of the relief fund - the June 2026 report's own line prices it at $300 charged to account 293.689-833, with $75 charges on a companion account - and logged six county burial allowances and two headstone placements in the first half of 2026; the county publishes no burial policy or application.

Also called: burial allowance, county burial, headstone, marker, 35.801, death, funeral, veterans cemetery, Adrian, Tecumseh, Onsted, Blissfield, Hudson, Clinton, Morenci, Deerfield.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse, survivor.

Where it applies

The duty. Michigan requires every county to pay at least $300 toward the burial of a qualifying wartime veteran, spouse or surviving spouse (MCL 35.801; see the Michigan entry on the county burial allowance). In Lenawee the county's department of veterans affairs handles it, and the work shows in the department's monthly Report of Activities rather than in any published county policy: the report attached to the Board's August 12, 2026 packet prints "County Burials Approved at the July Executive Committee: 1 @ $300.00 (Charged to 293.689-833) + 2 @ $75.00 Totaling $150.00 (Charged to 293.689-833.100)" - the $300 line is the statutory allowance, and what the $75 charges on the sub-account pay for (the report's companion table counts approved war burials and "approved headstone placements" by war era and by veteran or spouse) is nowhere explained. The year's counts. The March 2026 report shows six LCDVA County Burial Allowances for the year to date; the June 2026 report still shows six, with the war-burial table (World War II, Korean, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, OEF/OIF, peacetime, veteran and spouse) approved at six for January to June and one more at the July meeting, and two approved headstone placements. The office filed 35 federal burial, plot and travel allowance claims (VA 21P-530EZ) and 41 headstone, marker, medallion and presidential-memorial-certificate requests in the same six months. Getting it. No county page or form states the application or the proof. The route the department's own Burial Benefits page describes is to contact the Department of Veterans Affairs, 1040 S. Winter Street, Suite 3017, Adrian, 517-264-5335, which "can assist" with VA burial allowances, national cemetery burial (Fort Custer and Great Lakes are the nearest, and VA Form 40-10007 pre-need eligibility is on the page) and the county's share. What the county pays and on what papers rests on the State's $300 floor and the committee's approval of each claim, and the $75 figure is recorded as the report prints it.
