Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The service. The County Clerk's own page lists "To record a Military Discharge" among the services of its Vital Records and Elections office, Roxann Holloway, County Clerk, at 113 W. Front Street, Adrian (phone 517-264-4606; the Clerk's main line 517-264-4599), weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Michigan directs the clerk to record every discharge presented and index it, keeps the record confidential, and bars any charge to the veteran, the veteran's permission-holder, the surviving heirs, or a veterans service officer, the Michigan Veterans Trust Fund or a county veterans department counsellor working on a benefits claim (MCL 35.31 to 35.35; see the Michigan entry on discharge records at the county clerk). Lenawee keeps a separate elected Register of Deeds (Carolyn Bater, 425 N. Main Street), whose published fee schedule has no military-discharge line at all. The department's help. The Department of Veterans Affairs' Discharge and Military Records page works the same file from the other side: "Many veterans recorded their discharge paperwork with the Lenawee County Clerk at the time of separation from service. If your discharge has been recorded locally, our office can help you locate and obtain a copy quickly and at no cost." Where nothing was recorded locally, the page sends veterans and next of kin to the National Archives, to the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (1-800-MICH-VET) for those discharged as Michigan residents, and to the Michigan National Guard (517-481-8331) for Guard records, and it explains the correction routes: DD Form 293 within fifteen years of discharge, DD Form 149 after. The department filed 22 MVAA requests for a DD-214 and 16 SF-180s in the first half of 2026.
