Lea County Assessor: Veteran and Disabled Veteran Exemptions

The Lea County Assessor in Lovington (575-396-8626) applies the State's $10,000 veteran exemption and the disabled veteran exemption on the Department of Veterans' Services certificate, but the application it posts is the July 2021 form, which still says $4,000 and asks for a 100% permanent and total rating; since 2026 the exemption is proportional to any permanent service-connected rating.

Also called: property tax, veteran exemption, disabled veteran exemption, 7-37-5, 7-37-5.1, $10,000, certificate of eligibility, DVS Form 1, notice of value, Lovington, Hobbs, Eunice, Jal, Tatum.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Both exemptions are State law; the New Mexico entries on the $10,000 veteran exemption and the proportional disabled veteran exemption say who qualifies and how much comes off. The Lea County Assessor "grants certain property-tax exemptions allowable by state law" and applies these once the Department of Veterans' Services has certified the veteran. The form on the Assessor's page is out of date. Under "Online Documents" the Assessor links a "Veteran Exemption Certificate Application (PDF)". It is the Department's DVS Form 1 "(Revised July 2021)", which says the veteran exemption is "Up to four thousand dollars ($4,000) of the taxable value" and asks for the "Date Awarded 100% Permanent & Total Disability". Since tax year 2025 the veteran exemption is $10,000, and since tax year 2026 a veteran with any permanent service-connected rating takes that percentage of the home's remaining taxable value off. The form itself says previous editions "will not be used", so get the current DVS Form 1 from the Department rather than the county's copy. How to claim. Apply to the Department of Veterans' Services for the certificate of eligibility; its Hobbs office is at 2120 N. Alto Street (575-241-0714). Then file the original certificate with the Assessor no later than thirty days after the notice of value is mailed; for the disabled veteran exemption also file the Taxation and Revenue Department's form certifying ownership and continuous occupancy. If a VA claim is still pending at the thirty-day mark, protest to the Assessor with VA's notice of receipt (see the State entry). Where.
