Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Every South Carolina county has a veterans' affairs officer under section 25-11-40; see the South Carolina entry on county veterans affairs officers. Laurens County's office "assists veterans and their dependents in filing applications to determine their basic eligibility and conditions of benefit entitlement as administered by the US Department of Veterans Affairs", including "research, preparation, development, presentation, and prosecution of claims submitted to the VA Regional Office in Columbia or the Board of Veterans Appeals in Washington, DC". What it does. The responsibilities list: records and certifies DD-214s (Report of Separation); assists in preparation and filing of claims; helps with applications for discharge review or correction of military records; coordinates with other local and state agencies; visits VA hospitals, nursing homes and veterans' homes; files annuity applications for surviving spouses of military retirees; obtains the Certificate of Eligibility for a VA home loan; files for burial markers and burial benefits; directs veterans to VA and State Veterans Nursing Homes; and files for benefits the State of South Carolina offers. The FAQ says the Columbia Regional Office processes claims in an average of 60 to 120 days. The Forms & Documents page asks that completed forms be printed legibly and mailed or emailed to the office staff: VA Office Manager Wendy G. Powell, VA Representatives Kimberly Dixon and Kristin Cromer, at PO Box 193, Laurens, SC 29360, 864-984-4041. Van rides. "Laurens County provides a van service to Veterans. These trips are NOT reimbursed by the Veterans Affairs Office." Mondays and Wednesdays the van runs to the Greenville VA Medical Clinic, departing 8:00 a.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays to the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia, departing 7:30 a.m. - all from the Veterans Affairs Office at 105 Bolt Drive. VA appointments must be scheduled between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and the van leaves the facility no later than 2:00 p.m.; reserve a seat at least 36 hours ahead with driver Danny Shannon, (864) 871-1135, and bring the VA ID card. The office's contact for the van is Carey Bolt, (864) 984-4041. Who and where. Director Dale Williams (864-912-6020, [email protected]); the county directory lists the office at 100 Hillcrest Square for mail and the VA office itself at 105 Bolt Drive, Suite B, Laurens, SC 29360; office hours 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday; 864-984-4041 or 864-984-7589. County Council meets in the same building - its minutes name the "Laurens County Voters Registration / Veteran Affairs Building - 105 Bolt Drive" - so the office is inside the county's civic campus, next to the Historic Courthouse where the Council now sits (200 W. Public Square).
