Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The State rule. Section 30-15-10 requires each county to keep a book for recording discharges, section 30-15-20 makes the recording free, and since 2005 a recorded DD-214 is not a public record; see the South Carolina entry on recording and confidentiality of a discharge. What Laurens County does. The Register of Deeds has its own site, laurensdeeds.com: "Register of Deeds Office is within the Office of the Clerk of Court for Laurens County. Public records within the Register of Deeds Office include all land transactions, liens, and DD214 military discharges." The office records documents from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is open Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The office is the Clerk of Court's: P.O. Box 287, Laurens, SC 29360; 864-984-3538, fax 864-984-7023; the physical address is 100 Hillcrest Square, Suite B, Laurens (the Clerk's own General Information page). The county's Veterans Affairs Office also records and certifies DD-214s (see that entry). The fee schedule. The Recording Fees page carries no readable text, so no county fee line could be read; the State chapter prices the recording itself at nothing and certified copies at no more than fifty cents (section 30-15-60).
