Lauderdale County Revenue Commissioner: Disability Exemption and Homestead

Lauderdale County assigns the granting of exemptions to its Assessment department under Revenue Commissioner Billy Hammock, who invites owners to have their account reviewed for every exemption they may be entitled to.

Also called: property tax, homestead, revenue commissioner, ad valorem, disability exemption, Billy Hammock, Florence.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The State exemptions are the substance here: Code section 40-9-21's complete exemption for a person permanently and totally disabled on the principal residence and up to 160 acres, and section 40-9-19's routes, as the State's principal-residence entries explain. In Lauderdale County the claims are taken by the Revenue Commissioner's Office, and the commissioner's own welcome states the practice: there are several exemptions available that could lower the tax amount, and the office will review an account and verify what the owner may be entitled to receive. The structure. The office is divided into Collections (256-760-5785), Assessment (256-760-5785), which handles assessing real property as well as granting exemptions to those who qualify, and Appraisal/Mapping (256-768-7592). A disability claim starts with Assessment; the office's online forms and property-tax pages carry the paperwork.
