Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemption is the State's; see the Colorado entry. Since January 1, 2024 the application goes to the county assessor, and in Larimer County that is the Assessor's office in the Old Courthouse, 200 W. Oak Street, Fort Collins. What the Assessor says. The "Veteran with a Disability & Gold Star Spouse Exemption" needs an applicant who sustained a service-connected disability while serving on active duty, was honorably discharged, and is rated by the Department of Veterans Affairs as one hundred percent permanent and total disabled or has an unemployability determination, and who owned and occupied the property before January 1 of the current year. "Applications must be received by our office on or before July 1, 2026." The Assessor posts the Veteran with a Disability Property Tax Exemption Application with instructions, a Gold Star Spouse Application and an Application for a Surviving Spouse of Qualified Veteran with a Disability. "Completed forms cannot be submitted by email and must be mailed or dropped off at our office." Questions go to 970-498-7097 or [email protected]. Where the page leaves room to ask. C.R.S. 39-3-206 lets a veteran who missed the deadline ask the assessor to accept a late application, for good cause; Senate Bill 26-046 moves the deadlines to July 15 and August 15 from the 2027 filing season (its sections 8 and 9 take effect January 1, 2027), so the July 1 on the page will be wrong next year. The page does not say whether a home owned with a spouse counts as the veteran's, which 39-3-202(2)(c) treats as the veteran's own.
