Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The duty is the State's (1911 PA 235, MCL 35.801; see the Michigan entry), which sets $300. Lapeer's page: "The County Burial Allowance is a fund for Veterans who have at least 90 days of wartime service, honorably discharged, and a resident of Lapeer County. If the estate, (real & personal), does not exceed $40,000 excluding the homestead, the family may receive up to $1,000 toward the funeral expense from Lapeer County. The Veteran must also have been a resident of Michigan for a period of six months before entering service, or for a period of three years immediately preceding death." What the page leaves out. The statute also covers the veteran's spouse or surviving spouse and a veteran discharged early for a service-connected disability, and it gives two years from the death to apply; the page mentions none of these, so ask. Contact Veteran Services, 810-667-0256, Monday to Friday 7:30 to 4:30, for the forms.
