Who runs it. "The County Veteran's Service Office was established by the Lake County Board of Supervisors in 1946 to assist veterans, their dependents, and survivors in obtaining benefits from federal, state and local agencies administering programs for veterans. We are a county agency and not the federal Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)." It is a division of Health Services (budget unit 5321, presented at the Board's budget hearings on June 24, 2025 and June 16, 2026), and the Board renews its certificates of compliance for the CalVet subvention and the Medi-Cal cost avoidance programme each year (for FY2026/27 on June 9, 2026); see the California entry on county veterans service officers. What it does. The office's pages and FAQ cover VA disability compensation, pension and survivors' benefits, dependency and indemnity compensation, burial benefits and markers, VA health care, education and vocational rehabilitation, home loans and CalVet loans, life insurance, Agent Orange claims, PTSD claims ("Trained personnel are available to assist the veteran in developing a claim and obtaining treatment for same through our office"), ordering a lost DD-214 from the National Personnel Records Center, help gathering records for a discharge upgrade, and the CalVet college fee waiver for veterans' children. The Health Services Director told the Board in 2019 that the office's staff also work at the Clearlake clinic several days a week and with the treatment court and veterans in the jail. The county Veteran ID card. "The Lake County Board of Supervisors has authorized the County Veterans Service Office to begin issuing Veteran Photo ID Cards that will identify the individual as a U.S. military veteran." Staff "will follow U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) guidelines to verify that the individual has served in the U.S. military and was discharged under honorable conditions or for medical reasons." Call (707) 263-2384 for an appointment and bring the application, "a legible, original copy 4 of your DD214/Military Discharge or a copy of any VA rating decision showing you were rated with a service connected disability", and a driver's licence or other legal ID. The application says the card is not a VA card or a legal form of identification; businesses that give veteran discounts accept it at their discretion. Where and when. Lakeport: 285 North Main Street, Lakeport, CA 95453 (mail to 255 North Forbes Street); (707) 263-2384, fax (707) 262-1861; Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Clearlake: 15145 Lakeshore Drive, Clearlake, CA 95422; (707) 995-7233.
