Thresholds
| Gate | Rule |
|---|---|
| 50% or more for airport and cruise terminal parking | The Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs administers the airport parking program at a service-connected rating of at least 50 percent, and R.S. 29:27.2 sets 50 percent for the cruise terminal. This gate is not enforced in the rating filter because the underlying toll and state parking exemption in R.S. 29:27 names no percentage at all. |
| The toll statute names a disabled veteran without a percentage | R.S. 29:27 exempts a disabled veteran in a private vehicle from ferry and bridge tolls and state parking facility fees without naming a rating percentage. A veteran below 50 percent should ask a veterans assistance counselor about this provision specifically, since the department administers the airport and cruise terminal programs at 50 percent. |
| The Crescent City Connection is excepted | The toll exemption does not apply to the Crescent City Connection bridges and ferries, which is the Mississippi River crossing at New Orleans. |
| Cruise terminal parking needs proof of the rating and Louisiana residency | R.S. 29:27.2, as amended by Act 86 of 2025, limits free seven-day parking at the Port of New Orleans cruise terminal to a Louisiana disabled veteran at 50 percent or more, who proves the rating with either a military honor license plate or a Department of Veterans Affairs certificate, and proves residency with a Louisiana driver’s license or special identification card. Subject to availability. |
| Certification by a parish veterans assistance counselor first | Airport parking requires a form certified by a veterans assistance counselor; at the cruise terminal the certificate is one of two accepted proofs, the other being a military honor plate. Louisiana has at least one veterans service office in every parish, and the counselor's certification is a prerequisite rather than a convenience. Going straight to the assessor, the licensing office, or the park will usually get you turned back. |
