The La Crosse Area Veterans Court (LAVC) stood up on Veterans Day 2010; the court system's page calls it "the second Veterans treatment court program in Wisconsin", though the same page says Iron County's opened as the second in April 2010. It "focuses on early identification of Veterans in the criminal justice system to facilitate connection with available services as quickly as possible", and works with the La Crosse Area Veterans Mentor Program, a non-profit, whose trained mentors help each veteran through it. Who it serves. It "seeks Veterans in need of its services in La Crosse, Vernon, Monroe, Jackson, and Trempealeau Counties primarily, but will consider Veterans from other counties as appropriate." The presiding judge is Todd W. Bjerke, a retired Army Reserve colonel and Marine Corps veteran. Contact. Hannah Janvrin, Veterans Justice Program Manager, through the LAVMP office, 608-785-6420, 212 6th Street North, Room 450, La Crosse, WI 54601 (lavmp.org). A veteran facing charges in any of the five counties asks counsel or the contact about referral. Admission is the court's decision; there is no right to participate.
