Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Retired military members and veterans with a disability of 50 percent or more may be eligible for a 25 percent discount on their automobile insurance. The discount applies to the premium on any automobile liability insurance policy purchased in Louisiana covering motor vehicles owned by the military personnel. Twenty-five percent of a Louisiana auto liability premium is a large number. Louisiana has among the highest auto insurance costs in the country, so this is worth more here than the same percentage would be elsewhere. The qualifier that decides whether you actually get it: the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs states the discount is available "at the discretion of the insurance carrier." This is not an entitlement you can demand. It is a discount the state describes and insurers may apply. That changes how to pursue it. Do not assume your current carrier applies it automatically, because most do not volunteer discounts. Call and ask by name for the military or disabled veteran liability discount, and if the answer is no, treat it as a reason to quote the policy elsewhere rather than as the end of the matter. Because the discretion is the carrier's, the discount is effectively a shopping tool: the veterans who benefit are the ones who ask several insurers. Have the documentation ready when you call: retired military ID for a retiree, or a VA benefit summary letter showing 50 percent or more for a disabled veteran. Note the scope. It is written against automobile liability insurance covering vehicles owned by the military personnel. Comprehensive and collision coverage are not what the description names, and a vehicle titled only in a spouse's name may fall outside it. Contact your insurance company. The state does not administer this and a parish veterans assistance counselor cannot certify it, which makes it one of the few Louisiana benefits in this catalog that does not run through a veterans service office.

Thresholds

Thresholds for Louisiana Auto Insurance Discount for Disabled Veterans and Retirees
GateRule
50% or more on the disabled veteran pathThe disabled veteran path requires a disability of 50 percent or more. This gate is not enforced in the rating filter because retired military members are named as an independent qualifying group with no rating at all.
Military retirees qualify without a ratingRetired military members are named alongside veterans with a disability of 50 percent or more, so a retiree with no disability rating may be eligible.
Granted at the discretion of the insurance carrierThe Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs describes the discount as available at the discretion of the insurance carrier. It is not an entitlement, so ask each insurer by name and treat a refusal as a reason to shop the policy.
Automobile liability policies on vehicles the member ownsThe discount is described against automobile liability insurance purchased in Louisiana covering motor vehicles owned by the military personnel. Other coverages and vehicles titled elsewhere are not named.
