Knox County Board: the VAC’s own line-item movement in the 2026 budget season
The Knox County Board (chair Jared Hawkinson; meetings the fourth Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Galesburg City Hall Council Chambers, streamed on the county's YouTube channel) carries one veteran item in its window minutes - the May 27, 2026 approval of the budget line-item changes among which 'The VAC also requested a movement and that is in the same boat', the statute-required move of money within the Veterans Assistance Commission's own budget, 'we do not control their budget per se' - and no other veteran item; no benefit was adopted, narrowed or repealed.
Also called: County Board, Jared Hawkinson, VAC, Veterans Assistance Commission, line item changes, budget, Galesburg City Hall, fourth Wednesday, YouTube, Scott Erickson, Robin Davis, Galesburg, Knoxville, Abingdon, Oneida, Wataga, Williamsfield, Yates City, East Galesburg, Rio, Altona.
The board. Chair Jared Hawkinson; the board meets "as a full body regularly at 6 p.m., the fourth Wednesday of each month at the Galesburg City Hall, Galesburg, Illinois" in the Council Chambers, with electronic viewing on the Knox County YouTube channel and agendas posted the Friday before each meeting; the County Clerk-Recorder is Scott Erickson (309-345-3815) and the Treasurer Robin Davis. The meetings page posts each meeting's agenda, public packet and minutes; the window's ten minutes files (October 2025 through September 2026, born-digital PDFs; the February and March 2026 minutes are .docx) were downloaded and read whole.
The veteran item. The May 27, 2026 minutes: "Motion was made by Member Kramer and seconded by Member Bondi to approve Opening of Budget for Line Item Changes... Chair Hawkinson said that the budget line item changes were in the packet. He said that there are only a couple this time from the CAC. He said while we do not control their budget per say we still have to make the changes by statute to move money from one line to another. The VAC also requested a movement and that is in the same boat. The Public Defender's office, one for 50 E. Main St, for professional services changes and the General Fund for increased court orders for county to pay for services." The motion carried 14-0. The Veterans Assistance Commission is the county's own taxing body under 330 ILCS 45 - the board does not set its budget, but the statute routes its line-item movements through the board's approval.
The rest of the window's minutes carry no veteran item; the one veteran reference is a member's public comment thanking "our veterans" at the November 2025 meeting's Thanksgiving message.
The commission's own record runs beside the board's: the VAC page posts its own monthly agenda (Agenda November 2026) and its budget in the county's transparency portal.
