Kennebec County Sheriff's Office: Incarcerated Veterans Initiative
The Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office screens veterans at intake to the Kennebec County Correctional Facility, maintains a veterans-designated housing unit there, and works with the district attorney, clinicians, Maine Pretrial Services, NAMI and VA on a treatment plan, with a veterans track of the county’s Co-occurring Disorders Court.
Also called: Incarcerated Veterans Initiative, veterans housing unit, Correctional Facility, Co-occurring Disorders Court, veterans track, Justice Nancy Mills, jail, Augusta.
Kennebec County's own veteran programme is the sheriff's. The Sheriff's Office "initiated a new program which assists Veterans and their families in their transition back into the community", the Incarcerated Veterans Initiative: the jail "screens Veterans as they enter the Kennebec County Correctional Facility and determine appropriate programming that may assist the Veteran in their recovery"; veterans with minor sentences are treated by clinicians inside the facility with a veterans focus; and the facility "has established a housing unit which is specifically designated for Veterans".
Stakeholders named on the page are the District Attorney's Office, clinicians from Crisis and Counseling, Maine Pretrial Services, NAMI and the Veterans Administration, who "work with the Veterans to establish and conduct a treatment plan".
The page also records the court side: Justice Nancy Mills "agreed to operate a Veterans track of the Co-occurring Court, dealing specifically with Veteran related issues", the county's Co-occurring Disorders Court having run since 2005, which the page calls the first veterans court in Maine.
Read the page with its age in mind. Its text is undated and speaks of the programme's beginning ("Since the inception of this program in July, ten Veterans have been identified...", a count of 2.2 million active duty and reserve members, and "There are currently (48) Veterans Courts in the United States"), figures of about 2011. The current terms of the programme, its screening tool and whether the court's veterans track still sits are not published on the county's site, and the sheriff's office at 73 Winthrop Street, Augusta, (207) 623-3614, is the office to ask. The county's commissioners' agendas and minutes for the year add nothing: their only veteran line is a county EMA visit planned with the Department of Defense, Veteran Services and Emergency Management, Brigadier General Diane L. Dunn, for December 8, 2025.
