North Peninsula Recreation Service Area: Free Nikiski Pool and Exercise Room for Disabled Veterans
A disabled veteran rated 50 percent or more who owns property or lives in the North Peninsula Recreation Service Area (Nikiski) can use the Nikiski Pool and the NPRSA exercise room free during open hours, on a VA letter approved by the Recreation Director. Rentals, courts and the waterslide are excluded.
Also called: Nikiski Pool, NPRSA, North Peninsula Recreation, fitness room, exercise room, swimming, free admission, Nikiski, Kenai Peninsula.
The North Peninsula Recreation Service Area, a Kenai Peninsula Borough service area around Nikiski, has a Disabled Veterans' Policy in its General Policies & Rules: a disabled veteran who owns real property or lives within the service area may use the Nikiski Pool and the NPRSA Exercise Room free during open hours. The service area adopted the policy in fiscal 2011, its budget's accomplishments for that year record.
Who qualifies. The veteran must own real property in the service area or live in it, and set up a service area membership account the usual way, with the application and certification forms and proof of ownership or residence. On applying, the veteran gives a letter from the VA stating an honorable discharge, a disability rating of 50 percent or more, that the disability was incurred or aggravated in the line of duty, and whether or not it is permanent. The Recreation Director approves the letter; if the disability is not permanent, the letter is renewed every year.
What it is worth. Every service area member already swims free under the Borough's fee schedule effective July 1, 2026, so the policy's value is mainly the exercise room, which costs a member $3 a visit or $255 for twelve months (a non-member $5 a visit or $425 a year). The free use is for the veteran alone and excludes rentals, the racquetball and wallyball courts and the waterslide ($1.50 for a member). A veteran who does not qualify still pays $3 for general pool admission on a military ID.
