The 8th District Court for the County of Kalamazoo created its veterans treatment court by Local Administrative Order 2025-08, signed September 23, 2025 by Chief Judge Kathleen P. Hemingway and effective October 17, 2025, "in accordance with MCL 600.1200, et seq.", upon approval by the State Court Administrative Office. The order attaches the 10 Key Components and a Memorandum of Understanding with each participating prosecuting attorney, a representative of the criminal defence bar, community treatment providers and other key parties. The court uses the Drug Court Case Management Information System and is to be certified by the SCAO under MCL 600.1201 (see the Michigan entry on veterans treatment courts).
Eligibility. The order sets eligibility "consistent with MCL 600.1203 and 600.1205", so the statute's own test applies: a veteran under MCL 35.61, which takes any discharge other than dishonorable, with 180 days of active duty, whose offense is generally related to service, and no violent offender as MCL 600.1200(k) defines one. No participant is admitted until a complete preadmission screening and substance abuse or mental health assessment are done, and every participant signs a voluntary written agreement.
The State Court Administrative Office's certified list of May 7, 2026 entries the 8th District Court Veterans Treatment Court at Kalamazoo, phone (269) 384-8171, Region 5. The county Veterans Affairs Committee's minutes of July and August 2026 record the court seeking volunteer veteran mentors; ask the court or the Veterans Service Office.
