Kalamazoo County Veteran Burial Allowance

Kalamazoo County pays $300 toward a veteran's burial through its Veterans Service Office, the amount the State statute sets; its check registers record the payments as $300 VSO Burial Benefit cheques, and the county's burial application was updated in 2026.

Also called: burial, funeral, burial allowance, burial benefit, $300, 35.801, spouse, funeral home.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Michigan requires every county to pay at least $300 toward the burial of a qualifying wartime veteran, or the veteran's spouse or surviving spouse (MCL 35.801; see the Michigan entry on the county burial allowance). Kalamazoo County pays from its General Fund through the Veterans Service Office: the county's published check registers carry the account "Veterans' Burials" (10168100-83300) and record the payments as $300 "VSO Burial Benefit" cheques, three of them in the register before the Board's November 18, 2025 meeting and more in March 2026. Who qualifies. The county does not publish its own terms; the VSO page lists "accessing federal and local burial and headstone benefits" among its services and asks survivors to bring the DD214, the marriage licence and the death certificate. In April 2026 the Veterans Affairs Committee was updating a list of county funeral homes to visit in person with "the County Burial Benefits with the updated application", so the application is current but not posted. Apply through the Veterans Service Office, 311 E. Alcott Street, Kalamazoo, 269-373-5361; the statute's own tests (wartime service, an estate under $40,000 with the homestead excluded, a claim within two years) protect a family the county turns away.
