Kalamazoo County Clerk: DD-214 Copies, Honor Rewards and the Peddler's Licence

Michigan county clerks record discharges, keep them confidential for 70 years and give copies free to the veteran and those working on the veteran's behalf (MCL 35.31 to 35.35; see the Michigan entry on discharge records). Recording. The Clerk's Military Discharge page recommends that a veteran residing in Kalamazoo County record the DD-214 for safekeeping; there is no charge, the original is required and is handed straight back, and the record is confidential. Copies. On the DD214 Certified Copy Request form with a clear photocopy of a valid driver's licence or other government photo ID, by mail or drop box to Kalamazoo County Clerk, 201 W. Kalamazoo Ave., Room 103, Kalamazoo, MI 49007, with a stamped self-addressed envelope. The page names the statute's eligible requesters: "only an eligible person can receive a copy of a DD214 including veteran, person with veteran's written permission, heir (documentation required), veteran's service officer"; an immediate family member or spouse adds a certified death certificate and proof of relationship. "There is no charge to veteran or to a veteran's heir for a copy of the veteran's DD-214, effective 1/1/2025", and the Clerk's fee schedule lists Military Discharge Papers, to veteran or heir, at no charge. Honor Rewards. A veteran who files a DD-214 with the Clerk can sign up at honorrewards.com (selecting Kalamazoo County) or on a paper application for a free Honor Rewards card, honoured for discounts by participating retailers, restaurants and other businesses; businesses enrol free. The programme says requiring the filing "ensures that those receiving the discount are honorably discharged veterans". Licence to sell goods. The Clerk issues the veteran's peddler's licence under 1921 PA 359 (see the Michigan entry on the veteran's licence to sell goods) at no cost: apply in person as a Michigan resident with government-issued photo identification and the DD-214 paperwork.
