Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Johnston County Veterans Service Office helps veterans, their dependants and surviving spouses, children of deceased veterans, Guard and reserve members and active-duty service members apply for VA and State benefits. It has three service officers, each accredited through the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers, the American Legion, the State, the VFW and the DAV. Where and when. Johnston County Land Use Center, 309 E. Market St., Smithfield 27577, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Phone 919-989-5067, secure email [email protected]; post to P.O. Box 1144, Smithfield, NC 27577. Online. A first-time client fills in the office's online intake and the office calls back to book an appointment. The State's forms for military and veteran licence plates, the property tax exclusion (NCDVA-9) and the disabled veteran lifetime hunting and fishing licence (NCDVA-50) can be started online and are certified by a service officer. Staff will also help set up ID.me or Login.gov and the VA app. Rides to VA care. The office takes requests for rides to the Durham VA Medical Center, the Clayton, Garner, Brier Creek, Croasdaile and Hillandale VA clinics, or authorised community care, and passes them to the Johnston County Area Transit System (JCATS) for scheduling. Ask at least five business days ahead; rides outside the county run only on Mondays and Wednesdays, and the ride is confirmed only when JCATS emails a pickup time. The page states no fare. Veterans Rally Point. Since 2018 the office has held a free breakfast for veterans, surviving spouses and families on the second Wednesday of each month, 9 to 11 a.m., at Smithfield American Legion Post 132, 100 Pitchi Street, with service officers on hand. One thing to read with care. The office's pages still name the State agency as the "North Carolina Division of Veterans Affairs"; it is the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.
