The Johnson County Commission of Veteran Affairs consists of five members appointed by the Board of Supervisors to staggered three-year terms. The office is managed by a director nationally accredited with the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers. The director is Mandy Coates (Army) and the county veteran service officer is Josh Brown (Air National Guard). Temporary Emergency Assistance provides short-term financial assistance to eligible veterans and their dependents for rent, utilities, food, fuel and funeral expenses. To qualify, household income must be under 185 percent of the federal poverty level. An initial assessment is done over the phone or by email and an in-person office visit is scheduled accordingly. Required documents, printed and brought to the appointment or emailed or faxed in advance (print screens are not acceptable): the DD-214, mandatory for all programmes, which the office can help obtain or order; bank account statements for all household members over 18; and a current lease agreement signed by both parties or a utility bill in the applicant's name where applicable. A new application must be filled out for each request for assistance. Contact. Phone 319-356-6049, email [email protected], confidential fax 319-688-5849. The office also keeps the county's Armory and Veterans Memorial and answers questions on the Iowa Code chapter 35 framework.
