Also called: veterans advisory board, veterans assistance, indigent veterans, relief fund, Wendy Housekeeper, County Administrator, 360-385-9384, DD214, income guidelines, Port Townsend, Port Hadlock, Chimacum, Brinnon, Quilcene, Nordland.
For: Veteran or service member, spouse, child, survivor.
What the county runs. The Veteran Services page, under the Board of County Commissioners: "Thank you for serving our country! The Jefferson County Veteran's Service Officers Association welcomes you to the County Veteran's assistance programs for indigent veterans and their families." The programme is need-based: "To use this program, an emergency should exist. You are required to meet the income guidelines of the program."
How to apply. "Please make an appointment by contacting Wendy Housekeeper in the County Administrator's Office at the Jefferson County Courthouse by calling 360-385-9384." The required paperwork, as the page lists it: "DD214 or Military Discharge Paperwork showing Honorable Discharge"; a "Current Statement of Account from your financial institution"; for rent assistance "a rental contract and eviction letter from your landlord"; for utilities "a past-due or shut off notice from your utility provider". The page also carries the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255) - "Free Support for suicide prevention is offered to all veterans, service members, National Guard and Reserve, and their loved ones" - and a services link to saluteheroes.org/get-help/resources/.
The discharge test is narrower than the statute. The page asks for "DD214 or Military Discharge Paperwork showing Honorable Discharge"; the State defines a veteran by a "qualifying discharge" under RCW 73.04.005, which since chapter 146, Laws of 2024 also reaches a general discharge under honorable conditions, an other than honorable discharge where VA has found the veteran eligible for monetary benefits, and a discharge given solely for sexual orientation or gender identity (RCW 73.08.005). A veteran with a general or VA-accepted other than honorable discharge who is turned away should cite RCW 73.04.005 and ask for the decision and its reason in writing.
The board. A "Veterans Advisory Board" sits beside the programme, its By-Laws posted from the same page. The Board of County Commissioners is Greg Brotherton (Chair), Heidi Eisenhour and Heather Dudley-Nollette, meeting at the courthouse, 1820 Jefferson Street, Port Townsend; the County Administrator is Josh Peters.
Where. Jefferson County Courthouse, 1820 Jefferson Street, P.O. Box 1220, Port Townsend, WA 98368; the courthouse keeps hours 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the Auditor's recording window 8:30 to 4.
