Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder: Recorded DD-214s
The Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder keeps recorded DD-214s closed to the public and releases a copy only to the veteran or, after the veteran's death, to close family, on a notarized request. Its fee schedule lists no free recording of a discharge; most documents are $43.
Also called: DD-214, DD214, discharge, Clerk and Recorder, recording, certified copy, Golden, 24-72-204.
Recording. The Clerk and Recorder's fee schedule charges a flat $43 for a letter or legal size document and lists no exception for a military discharge (death records are the one free item). Colorado has no statute that makes recording a discharge free, so ask Records and Licensing (100 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden; 303-271-8121) before sending a fee; El Paso and Arapahoe Counties record them free as their own practice.
Copies. A DD-214 recorded here is not public. C.R.S. 24-72-204(3)(a)(XVIII) closes discharge records filed with a county clerk and recorder and lets the custodian open them only to the veteran or, if the veteran has died, to the veteran's parents, siblings, widow or widower, and children. The Clerk's Request for DD214 form, revised June 2025, must be notarized and mailed to Suite 2560 with a return address. Digital copies of recorded documents are free and a certified copy is $1.
Where the form is narrower than the law. The form limits a widow or widower to one who has "not remarried". The statute says only "widow or widower" and sets no remarriage rule, so a remarried surviving spouse is within the law and can ask the Clerk to release the record.
