Jefferson County Assessor: Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption

The Jefferson County Assessor takes the State's disabled veteran exemption, half of the first $200,000 of the home's value, by July 1 in 2026 and by July 15 from 2027 under Senate Bill 26-046. Its application includes individual unemployability and 100% medical retirement, but the Assessor's web page, updated December 2025, still names only a 100% permanent and total rating.

Also called: property tax, assessor, disabled veteran exemption, July 1, July 15, SB26-046, Gold Star spouse, individual unemployability, 39-3-203, Board of Equalization, Golden, Jeffco.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemption is the State's; see the Colorado entry. Since January 1, 2024 applications go to the county assessor, and in Jefferson County that is the Assessor's office, 100 Jefferson County Parkway, Suite 2500, Golden (303-271-8629 for the exemption; appointments can be booked online). The deadline was July 1 in 2026; it is July 15 from 2027. The application is right. The Assessor's application asks the veteran to confirm a service-connected disability rated 100% permanent, medical retirement at 100%, or individual unemployability, with the VA Summary of Benefits letter or the branch's medical retirement letter attached. The Assessor also posts the surviving spouse and Gold Star spouse forms. The page is not. The Assessor's Information for Veterans page, last updated December 22, 2025, says the disability must be rated "one hundred percent permanent and total" and does not mention individual unemployability, which Amendment G added from property tax year 2025. A veteran with unemployability qualifies; use the application, which says so. The page also says "honorably discharged"; C.R.S. 39-3-202 asks for separation under honorable conditions, which includes a general discharge. What it is worth. The taxable value is cut by half of the first $200,000 of actual value, so the most it can take off is $100,000 of value. It cannot be combined with the senior exemption on the same home, and the State reimburses the County for the tax. If it is denied. A denied applicant can ask the county Board of Equalization for a hearing. In 2026 the Board appointed referees on July 14 to hear senior and disabled veteran exemption appeals and adopted their recommendations on September 1 (Resolution CC26-233). C.R.S. 39-3-206 also lets a veteran who missed July 1 ask the Assessor to accept a late application for good cause, up to August 1 in 2026, and Senate Bill 26-046 moves the deadlines to July 15 and August 15 from the 2027 filing season (its sections 8 and 9 take effect January 1, 2027).
