Jackson County Tax Collector: Military Exemption on Vehicle Ad Valorem Taxes
A military member stationed in Mississippi and registered here but a legal resident of another state is exempt from the ad valorem tax on the vehicle in Jackson County, paying only privilege tax, registration fees and title fees, on a current LES and orders.
Also called: vehicle tax, ad valorem, tags, military exemption, nonresident, LES, orders, tax collector.
The Jackson County Tax Collector publishes a Military Exemption on Tags: a member of the military who is a legal resident of another state but is stationed in Mississippi and registers the vehicle here is exempt from the ad valorem (property) tax on the vehicle. The exemption does not apply to a legal resident of Mississippi who registers a vehicle in Mississippi, and it does not waive the privilege tax, registration fees, title transfer fees, or any other required fee, only the ad valorem portion.
Proof. The collector asks for the most recent copy of the member's leave and earnings statement and the orders stationing the member in Mississippi. The military member's name must be on the registration; joint ownership and lease agreements are accepted as long as the military member's name is on the registration.
This is the county tax collector's administration of Mississippi's exemption of nonresident military members' vehicles from ad valorem tax. The MSRRA rules in the State's military retirement entry cover why a spouse's domicile can matter elsewhere in the tax system; this exemption turns only on the member's own residency and stationing, and Jackson County is one of the seventeen counties where the tax collector is a separate elected office, at 2915 Canty Street, Pascagoula, (228) 769-3074.
