Jackson County Recorder of Deeds: Free DD-214 Recording and Copies
The Jackson County Recorder of Deeds, in the Truman Courthouse in Independence, records discharge papers free and gives copies on a notarised request. The page's request form link goes to the National Archives SF-180, which asks the federal records centre, not the Recorder.
Also called: DD-214, DD214, recorder of deeds, discharge papers, 59.480, certified copy, Independence, SF-180.
Mo. Rev. Stat. 59.480 makes every Missouri recorder of deeds record military discharge documents free and give certified or uncertified copies free, with no notary fee, to the veteran and other authorized parties; see the Missouri entry. In Jackson County the Recorder of Deeds is at the Historic Truman Courthouse, 112 W. Lexington, Suite 30, Independence, open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ([email protected]; 816-881-4483).
Copies. The Recorder's page says the office verifies the information on a request form, which must be notarized, before giving out a recorded discharge.
The wrong form. Under "Military DD214 Form" the page offers a "Military Discharge Papers (DD214) Request Form", but the link opens Standard Form 180, the National Archives' request for records held by the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. That form does not go to the Recorder. Section 59.480 requires recorders to use the request form set by the Recorders Association of Missouri, so ask the Recorder for that form, or use SF-180 only if you want a copy from the federal government instead. Under the statute the Recorder may not charge for notarizing the request.
