Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Michigan requires every county to pay at least $300 toward the burial of a qualifying wartime veteran, or the veteran's spouse or surviving spouse (MCL 35.801; see the Michigan entry on the county burial allowance). Jackson County's Veterans Affairs budget document states the county amount plainly: "Amount range up to $300 for county benefits" - the statutory floor, no more. The same document describes the work: "Veteran Burial Claims assists families of deceased veterans with expenses for their funerals. Through this office, the county supplies all flags that are placed on all graves of veterans buried in Jackson County." A notarized employee processes the county burial applications; the office reports 30 or more burial reimbursement applications and 70 or more bronze marker and headstone applications a year, with a graveside flag and flag holder provided at the time of a marker application, and over 15,857 flags distributed to the partnered organizations that place them in Jackson County cemeteries. Checking the burial claims is the first listed duty of the county's Veterans Affairs Committee. The money is a general-fund line: "Veterans Burial Claims" was budgeted $17,700 for 2025 ($16,294 spent) and $18,200 for 2026, and stays $18,200 in the 2027-2028 budget the Board began considering in September 2026 - roughly fifty to sixty claims a year at the $300 rate. Apply through the Veterans Affairs office, 1715 Lansing Avenue, Jackson, 517-788-4425. The county's terms beyond the budget document are not published; the statute's own tests - a discharge under honorable conditions, wartime service, an estate under $40,000 with the homestead excluded, and a claim within two years - protect a family the office turns away.
