Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemptions are the State's; see the Alabama entries on sections 40-9-19 and 40-9-21. The county's part is the Revenue Commissioner, who assesses and collects for Jackson County. What the Revenue Commissioner's page says. Its property-tax text walks through the State's categories: "Taxpayers under age 65 who are not disabled are entitled to the basic, regular homestead ... the first $4,000.00 of assessed value for state property taxes and the first $2,000.00 of assessed value for county property taxes. Taxpayers age 65 and older with an annual adjusted gross income of less than $12,000.00 ... are totally exempt from the entire state portion ... Taxpayers age 65 and older with net taxable income of $12,000.00 or less on the combined ... Federal Income Tax Return are exempt from all property taxes. ... Taxpayers who are permanently and totally disabled are exempt from all property taxes. There is not an income limitation. Disabled taxpayers must present two forms of proof to receive this exemption." And the filing instructions: "Claim any exemption due you. Make sure all of this is done no later than December 31 for all property purchased by October 1, in order to receive a bill in your name for the next year." The page carries the county's millage - the state 6.5, county-wide schools 10, county 7.5, hospital 4 and fire fund 2 mills, with the city districts from 30 to 50 - which is what a veteran's exemption is worth against. It publishes no veteran-specific text of its own, so the State entries on the totally disabled veteran's full exemption (40-9-21) carry that route; the page does not say which documents count as the two proofs, so a veteran with a VA total rating should ask the office whether the VA letter is one of them. The county's property search runs on its own portal (jacksonproperty.countygovservices.com).
